amongst and midst

Hi,

Please tell me why a person would use the words "amongst" and "in the midst" rather than "among" and other appropriate words like "in the middle of" or "during the" respectvely? Is that because they have specific meanings and can be not better substituted with the others given?

They are just rather more 'poetic' ways of saying exactly the same thing. Sometimes people want to create a special effect by using them.
