'among' vs 'between'

Three soldiers fought 'among' themselves. (This sounds correct.)

The fight was between Joe, Mike and Steve. ('Between' or 'among'? More than two people involved, but 'between' sounds more correct to my ear.)

The contract was between the buyer, seller and mortgagor.

(Again, three people but 'between' – not 'among' – sounds like the better choice here.)

Thank you.
