"among many" or "among the many"

Which is the correct form? "Among the many processes..." or "Among many processes..."?

In this sentence, use the definite article:

Among the many processes being investigated, the reduction of carbon dioxide is one of the most important.

"processes" seems to be an odd word there and muddies the waters a bit. But I still think the "the" in question can be omitted.
