'Americans' vs 'American people'?

Hi,
Which is more formal - 'Americans' or 'American people'? If we want to talk about American people in general, should we say 'the American' or 'Americans' or 'American people'?

Many thanks,
Nessie.

" However, I would always say something like "generally" after it. If there is one thing that marks the people of my country, it's the diversity of thought, background, attitude, and approach! It would be easier to see a full sentence, though.

Hi Nessie,

I would just say "Americans..."

However, I would always say something like "generally" after it. If there is one thing that marks the people of my country, it's the diversity of thought, background, attitude, and approach!

It would be easier to see a full sentence, though.
