They are unable to vote, use a checkbook, or write a note to a child's teacher. An estimated 50% of all Americans cannot fill out a job application. Nearly 75% of America's unemployed have trouble reading and writing, a fact that seriously threatens the quality of the applicant pool available to business.

Job safety, job performance, and product quality are seriously affected when employees lack basic reading and writing skills.

This has aroused opposition right from the beginning:

I seem to recall that Greek was seriously suggested as the official language of America in the 18th-century.

No doubt there will be some cheap shots in reply to your post, but let me congratulate you on your courage and determination to fight your way out of illiteracy.
I'm sure that we all hope that you learn to love this crazy language and its regional variations as much as everyone else on this newsgroup. That is why many of us are so defensive or protective of our own way of doing things.
