American writers' journals

Instead of, say, American writers' journals are usually concise can I say an American writer's journals are usually concise or do I have to turn everything into the singular, an American writer's journal is usually concise?
(My vote goes to the latter, but I thought I'd ask, just to be sure)

Thank you
H.

The reason I'm asking is that my rusty non-native ear was hearing an evidently non-existent friction between the singular an and the plural journals.
