American sliced cheese

Can you please tell me if it is some special cheese, or does it simply mean that it is sliced.
I've googled it and I saw sliced packaged cheese.
Is it perhaps cheese meant to be put in toast and melted?

I think so, Antonia. I think American Cheese is almost equivalent to Cheddar cheese, i.e. a basic firm cheese which can be eaten in its natural state or used for cooking (cheese sauce, etc.)
