American and British English

I was wondering, why there is a difference between American English and the one followed by Britishers?
There are some examples like:
Honor (AmE) Vapor (AmE)
Honour (BrE) Vapour (BrE)
What difference does it make really?

It makes no difference, except that AmE spellings are appropriate in the USA, and Br E spellings in the UK. Many of the dfferences are a rsult of Noah Webster's work.
