What is the most popular American accent e.g. Californian or New York or what? And what is the standard American accent?

I don't know that any survey or poll has ever been taken. Many people like a southern accent, and don't care for the heavy accents from the Appalachian region or the Bronx. The broadcast TV standard is a midwestern accent.
