It's correct. (We usually use a D instead of an R to show that sound, but I'm sure there's nothing wrong with your hearing!

I think you should know how the long 'o' sound differs. The reason why it sounds so differently is because the 'o' sound. And of course, more frequently used t-flap of American English.

Americans don't say "War-ter." Maybe they do somewhere, but it's not the most common.
Wah-der is what I usually hear.
The vowel sound will change depending on where you are in the US.
