AmE — Quote Marks and Commas

In American English, would the commas go inside the quote marks (as exampled below) with the following abbreviations?
This, of course, would be an alternative to italicization. Is the following correctly punctuated per AmE?

The abbreviations "etc.," "et al.," "a.m.," and "p.m." were used way too often in your essay.

Thank you.

This will depend on your manual of style. Generally in the US, commas and periods go inside the quotes, semicolons and colons go outside the quotes, and question marks and exclamation marks follow the sense of the text.

I agree. The results are horrible.

I emailed The Chicago Manual of Style, and they said the following is correct per AmE:

The abbreviations "etc.," "et al.," "a.m.," and "p.m." were used way too often in your essay.

There you have it.

I find it hard to believe that's news to you, this being your 500th thread on the placement of punctuation relative to quote marks.
