Ambush

Hello,

When we say lionesses hide into grass and wait for prey ,do we mean lionesses want to ambush,I mean attack by surprise?

But in my experience, "ambush" is used when we have reason to suspect that suitable prey will be passing our location, or that a particular person whom we wish to ambush will come this way.

I think the legal term is "to lie in wait."
