Ambivalent?

Hi.
I'm not sure what ambivalent means. Does it mean apathetic, as in 'lack of interest'?
And also, what context can it be used in?

Many thanks.

Akiyo.

Hi Akiyo, Ambivalent is being of two minds on a topic. I hate crowds but I love night life, so I am ambivalent about going into Tokyo on Saturday night. You are ambivalent if you hold two opposing opinions simultaneously, or if you fluctuate between them.

ambivalent sometimes means ambiguous, that people have a different opinion on one subject. e,g,We are both somewhat ambivalent about having a child.

That is misusage of the words, Jenny. 'Ambiguous' has to do with intrepretation of a phenomenon or situation, and understanding it, while 'ambivalent' has to do with attitude and decision-making about a phenomenon or situation. The situation is ambiguous; the observer is ambivalent.

I will also suggest that 'we are both somewhat ambivalent about having a child' means that each of the

Haha.
My definition of ambivalent with lack of interest didn't even come close to the actual definition. Well, thanks for it!

'Apathetic' is a very nice word too, though, Akiyo.

'Pathetic' -- 'with feeling'
'Apathetic' -- 'with no feeling'
'Sympathetic -- 'with together feeling'
'Empathetic -- 'with within feeling'

If you say that someone is ambivalent about something, they seem to be uncertain whether they really want it, or whether they really approve of it.

= unsure

...I always thought it meant 'vague'

According to my dictionary: having mixed feelings or contradictory ideas.

So many of the examples given are correct.

Spellcheck.
I think the word you're refering to is, ambiguous which relatively means vague, as in unclear or indefinite. Whereas, ambivalent was defined as something completely different by Mr. M.
