This spirit of the times may also include people who have a 'wooden' aesthetic.

So it is a bad comparison to me...

I'd paraphrase the original sentence as this.

Ted’s awkward and dull English appreciation of beauty painfully contrasts with the lively American spirit of the times.

I can find a meaning in that, albeit not a profound one.
