Ambiguity of the sentene

Hi teachers,

I have a sentence that seems ambiguous to me.
let us see!
"When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water, it turns milky."

I want to say lime water gets milky, but a reader may be confused and he may get the idea that CO2 gets milky.

please tell if this sentence is really ambiguous.

if yes, how can I improve it. I do not want to make major changes.
