Ambiguity

Morocco was also of interest to the French because they assumed that their grip on Algeria would never be secure if they did not hold it.

1.is "it" ambiguous here ...I think it could refer to Morocco as well as Algeria...

2.Will ambiguity be resolved restructuring the sentence as below...

The original is fine, it's not ambiguous. Logically, the it can refer only to Morocco. Granted, the French still have to hold Algeria too but that fact goes without saying and doesn't need to be explicitly stated.
