amazing vs astonishing

Hello there!
Could you please explain to me the difference between the words
"amazing" and "astonishing"?
As far as I know they differ in degree. But the majority of exercises I looked at were rather confusing - either of those words seemed to be applicable.
Any advice or maybe a rule of thumb?

My American Heritage dictionary defines astonish : to fill with sudden wonder or amazement. I feel no difference between amazing and astonishing . Because of "to fill with sudden wonder," there might be an element of 'surprise' in astonishing .
