Amazing / awesome

Hi,

what's the difference between these words? I think you can use both words to describe you really like something, but what's the difference, e.g. which one is stronger, and when to use it?

Top answer

These words are used so much by young people these days that in most situations they have lost their true meaning. They both usually just mean ' It's nice. ' Clive

Can you tell me which of the words would you consider to be stronger? I feel that awesome is stronger than amazing but I'm not sure.

As I said, there is no real difference in the way they are usually used in everyday conversation.
In what context do you want to use these words? What do you want to describe?

Hi

I can't really disagree with Clive but, if I had to give a difference, I'd say ...

- Amazing - when you are confused or bewildered or surprised by how good something is

- Awesome - refers to a religious feeling that includes fear: you find it great, but, in a way, it makes you feel small

But I wonder if the speaker wants to describe eg a volc

Agreed

A volcano would be awesome; the fact that the Pope used to go to work on the bus is amazing

I don't mean in the sense of awe-inspiring, I mean in the sense of cool or great. Like, go get this new computer game, it's awesome / amazing. In this context, would you consider an "awesome" game to be better than an "amazing" game?

Hi geoyo

I'm probably too old to answer that but I'd say awesome is 9/10 and amazing is 8/10 - that's just my impression!

The way I always hear it, there is no difference in such a case.

I think they both can be synonymous. However, awesome can mean that someone or something is so cool that makes you feel great, happy or just makes your day. Amazing on the other hand can be beyond awesome, it can indicate that someone or something have the sweet, heart melting feeling.
