Context:

Another file in the Atlas Group Archives, titled I Only Wish that I Could Weep, contains the “found” videotapes of “Operator 17,” an intelligence officer of the Lebanese army who since 1997 was assigned to eavesdrop or spy on individuals circulating on the Corniche, a boardwalk on the sea in Beirut. The tapes feature a sunset presumably shot from that boardwalk; these conventionally beautiful images of the changing colors of a sunset on the beach,then, seem not to involve the activity of the collecting of military information on the part of an army officer. In addition to these images, the tapes also present a visualization of a conscientious objector, a Lebanese citizen who rejects the evidentiary procedures of wartime in favor of another that has an aesthetic outcome and that rejects conflict entirely. In the Atlas Group project, Fakhouri/Operator 17/Ra’ad, then, amasses the beginnings of a history of the Lebanese wars in presenting radically different kinds of visual information or data as an historical, though possibly fictional, archive.
