AM or am or a.m. or A.M. ?

what are the grammar rules regarding times? For instance, should "am" have periods, be capitalized, etc. ?

I think you will find most official advice nowadays is to use a.m.

Personally I need to write to the Plain Language Commission's Clear English standard at work and they only like am without any punctuation.
