Am I using the word respectively correctly

  • Under the new pension scheme, pension is given to the senior citizens of 60 years and above and 80 years and above at the rate of 100 dollars and 200 dollars per month respectively.

"Respectively" is used correctly enough, but two things come to mind. People over 80 are also over 60, which makes nonsense of the sentence. We can easily figure out what you mean, but it is the writer's duty to be clear, not the reader's to guess.

  • Also, whenever you find that you have written "respectively" (or "former/latter"), recast the sentence.
