Am I stressing correct words? Jazz Chants 5

Hi,

Could you please check if I am stressing correct words in the following lines from 'Jazz Chants'?

Poem- On a diet

No matter what she gave up, her skirts are very tight.

Cause she ate twelve cans of tuna fish for dinner every night.

Twelve Cans of Tuna Fish Rag

What kind of fish?

How often does she eat those twelve big cans.

That’s too much tuna, if you ask me.

Panic on being late

What time is it?

We are going to be late.

Oh, I don’t have time to talk to you now.

Ouch! That hurts

What’s the matter? I stubbed my toe.

What is the matter now?

Gee! You are clumsy today!

Thanks,

MG.

One challenging thing with stress is that it can change according to the speaker's message, according to what the speaker thinks is most important at that minute. Still, I can give a general way of stressing the first two lines: No MA tter WHA t she gave UP , her SKIR ts are VE ry TI ght. 'Cause she ATE twelve CA ns of TU na FI sh, for DI nner EV ery NI ght.

  • Perhaps I could also emphasize "gave" but it doesn't sound completely natural to me.
  • I think you'll find other native English speakers will have other points of view!
