Am I stressing correct words? Jazz Chants 4

Hi,

Could you please check if I am stressing correct words in the following lines from 'Jazz Chants'?

Poem - A Bad day

got stuck in the elevator,

couldn’t take any more.

Do you know Mary?

Do you know Mary? Mary who?

Do you know her little brother?

Do you know her husband Bobby?

Departure

Don’t forget to call me when you get back.

Return

I am so glad you’re back! So am I .

On a diet

First she gave up smoking.

Then she gave up Chocolate cake.

On lazy Sunday mornings she even gave up brunch.

Thank you,

MG.

I thought that when saying a phrasal verb, we have to stress the preposition part, i.e. up in 'gave up'. Is that correct?

I'm sure I didn't say 'have to'. And it's an adverb, not a preposition. But what I am trying to get into your head that there are many contextual factors that influence the flow of stresses through an utterance. There are no absolutes, only tendencies.

'First she 'gave up ''smoking.

'Then she 'gave up 'chocolate ''cake.
