Am I an alien?

During a conversation with a group of people ranging from young to elderly at a party, I mentioned something about "Potemkin Villages". Not one of these people all professionals knew the meaning of "Potemkin Village". What the Fu...? Is this esoteric? I always figured it was a common expression. Am I an alien?
