Am here for the best part of 2 months

1. I am studying here for two years.
2. I have been studying here for two years.

#1 means I'm in the process of studying for two year; #2 means, usually, I have the experience of having studied here for a period of two years.

Here's the beginning of a letter:

-I am down here in absolute solitude for the best past of 2 months.

Nowadays should we change AM to HAVE BEEN? My reason for change: As stated, AM refers to IN THE CURRENT PROCESS, but the context clear shows that it is absurd to plan for living in solitude for the most part of two months (if he could, that would be TWO MONTHS simply, not THE MOST PART OF TWO MONTHS), though we can plan to study at a certain place for two months.

Top answer

- I am down here in absolute solitude for the best part of 2 months. I would interpret this is that the person just started their period of solitude, and this is planned to go on for six weeks or so. It is not good English, though you will hear it.
