Always on my mind 2

" Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind"

The song writer uses the present tense and past tense all together.

In the underlined portion: why not use past tense all the way?

I guess I never told you
I was so happy that you were mine.

Thanks

You could consider it a literal quote of the words he said (or, in fact, didn't say) at the time. e. fits the melody better).

You could consider it a literal quote of the words he said (or, in fact, didn't say) at the time. The real reason, though, is probably that the present-tense version scans better (i.e. fits the melody better).
