altitud/elevation

When should altitud / elevation be used?
talking about flights.. it is altitud, isnt it?
when are about peaks.. altitud is ok, isnt it?
but talking about houses or hotels which were built at an elevation / an altitud? ..
when a person climbs.. so climbing a peak of...5000 mts of altitutd??
