ALTHOUGH/ EVEN THOUGH /AS/WHILE

Question

Transpiration from soil and from plants returns approximately 21 of the 30 inches to the atmosphere, while the balance of 9 inches contributes to the flow of streams and rivers.

Can WHILE in above sentence be replaced with ALTHOUGH/ EVEN THOUGH /AS without changing the meaning? I am really confused in using ALTHOUGH/ EVEN THOUGH /AS/WHILE. Can someone highlight the difference?

No, it can't be done.

and would be very close to while in this sentence.

as the balance ... contributes would sound a lot like because the balance ... contributes. I don't believe that as is appropriate here.

Consider that in the U.S. we expect summers to be hot and winters to be cold. We can say

It's very hot, [even though / although] it is winter.

It's very cold, [even though / although] it is summer.

although or even though (which are just about equivalent in effect) suggest that what is stated in the main clause is strange or unexpected if you consider the implications of the information in the although clause. You might paraphrase these with considering that or given that. I don't find them appropriate in this case.
