Although /But

Sunspots are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun but have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator.

Sunspots are visible as dark spots on the surface of the Sun although they have never been sighted on the Sun's poles or equator.

Guys,

Can someone help me to understand the difference between ALTHOUGH and BUT.? Which of the above sentence is correct and why ?

Thank you

Both sentences are fine. As you can see, 'but', as a coodinating conjunction, can join compound predicates to one subject ('sunspots'), while 'although', as a subordinating conjunction, cannot. Hence the subject 'they' is needed for the second clause.
