re: alternative question. There are two pictures: a book is in one picture and some books are in another one. If there were a book in one picture and a note-book on another one, an alternative question would be like this: IT IS A BOOK OR A NOTE-BOOK? But when we have the singular and the plural, what it will be like? IS IT A BOOK OR BOOKS? IS IT A BOOK OR ARE THESE BOOKS?
