The problem is that it is not a different line of research, it is still the same line. The meaning is that the previously used approch in synthesizing elements exhausted itself, so an alternative solution using inelastic reactions in synthesis of elements (so that further progress in this field can be accomplished) was suggested.

How about speaking of 'a slight change to this line of research'?

Can you think of an expression with the word 'alternative'? I need to emphasize that these slight changes are alternative to the first option. Alternative way in synthesizing maybe?
