alternate vs. alternative

Is "alternate" now an acceptable synonym for "alternative"? For example, is it acceptable to say "You need an alternate strategy in case something unexpected happens."

Thanks.

I find them equally natural and acceptable. "Alternative" wins the Google Prize two to one: "alternative plan" 683,000 hits "alternate plan" 320,000 hits (doesn't prove anything)

Thanks, Avangi. But isn't "alternate" a pattern of having or doing first one thing, then another, then the first, then the other...?

Hi, sarcandra,

My understanding is that the verb "to alternate" refers to the pattern, and the adjective "alternating" does the same; but that the noun "alternate" refers to a substitute.

Rgdz, - A.

Edit. Hmmm, my 1980's dictionary doesn't list a noun.
I recall statements like "We elect three regular members and an alternate." Let me search elsewher
