Alternate or interchange?

Hello everyone!

I've got a question for you:

1. Which of two words form the subject is more naturally to use in the following situation:
the weather events come one by one - several minutes sunshine, several minites rain, several minutes sunshine, several minites rain, and so on ...

Should I say sunshine interchanges with rain or sunshine alternates with rain ?
Maybe one of the verbs is more formal?

"Alternates" is by far the better choice, because in most cases it implies a sequence - that is, one follows the other in time. Time may stand still, so to speak, during an exchange/interchange. "

I would not use "interchanges."
