Alternate or Alternative?

I have been looking around the Internet to try to figure out the differences between these two words when used as adjectives, but I'm getting conflicting answers. So I have come to the forum I haven't been on in a long time, this time to ask a question. Could somebody enlighten me on when to use which one (as adjectives)?
