Alter ego

Hi
One definition seems to be a good buddy who you trust, the other definition, however, is unclear to me. "an invented person that you use to represent part of your character that is very different from your usual one" from Longman dictionary. Would someone please explain it, possibly with a few examples?
Thanks

Hi, Broadly speaking, the phrase means 'another I'. With your buddy example, the idea is that your buddy is almost like you and almost always with you. This is the most common use, I'd say.

Another way of saying your example is to say "He uses his alter ego to give presentations."?
or another example of alter ego could be: "He's usually quite and nice but when his alter ego takes him over he becomes cranky and could be even dangerous" maybe?
