Already, just

I know that British people tend to use present perfect with the words "just" and "already". I'm also sure that most of Americans use past simple in such cases.

Why do some Americans use present perfect with the given words above?

I've just eaten. - I just ate.
I've already done that. - I already did that.

As you mentioned, these are just regional differences. Do you have an example of something you heard from a US speaker and some context to clarify? I'm from the US (Northeast), and I tend to hear past simple as you mentioned.

  • To my ears, present perfect sounds a bit--well-a bit British.
  • " Hard to say without an example though.
