Alps plural? Alps as a singular?

Please tell me why I keep writing this sentence this way:

The Alps were steep in places, and Peter doubted that the army's catapults would have breached its uppermost slopes.

And whether it's correct or incorrect. Thank you.

I used 'catapults' to avoid the Roman 'tomenta' I am using. And Peter was doubting that the tormenta would reach the higher slopes.
