Along the edge or edges?

Hi. In the Naver.com's dictionary (on line), I saw this definition for the words "river bank" and wonder if it couldn't be the word "edges" for the word "edge." Don't we have edges along the river's left and its right?

A river bank is the land along the edge of a river.
