Say if there are 47 out of 100 people are female, I guess I can say that "almost/nearly 50% of them are female."
But how about this: if there 53 out of the 100 people are female, can I still say that almost/nearly 50% of them are female? I doubt it. I kind of do not think almost or nearly are suitable here; I am seeking words to express "a little bit more than." Can you help me with this?
Thanks.

You really can (but don't) use almost/nearly, BUT it's better to say "more than 50% of them are female." You are correct in your intuition. "Almost/nearly" connote "less than." If you use "more than," then you are expressing "a little more than half."
