"allowed to receive" or "chosen to receive"?

after about ten minutes, she(the cashier) said.“Oh,that’s why I can’t find it(the receipt) in our system. You should have received a phone call a few days ago that your layaway was paid off by a secret Santa.”I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! This kind of story only happens in the news. Why was my family ______ to receive such a blessing?
The key is "chosen to receive". But could you tell me why I can't say "allowed to receive"? Thank you in advance.

I don't see that that additional text makes any difference.

The word 'blessing' suggests to me that the writer is thinking of religion.
eg Why was my family chosen by *** to receive such a blessing?
eg Why was my family allowed by *** to receive such a blessing?

Thank you, Clive. But I become confused since I have brought this question to another native teacher beforehand, who told me only "chosen" is correct because generally the one who feels blessed would feel like they were 'chosen' or 'favored'. So I don't know why you think "allowed" also works in this sentence? Could you tell me?

I told you I prefer 'chosen'.

But don't you think that *** can allow things to happen?
