Allophones

I am writing an essay on complimentary distribution and free variation of allophones. I have come across several processes that occur in speech and I am not sure if they are relevant to my essay or not. The processes are coarticulation, assimilation, elision and liaison - I roughly know what they are but Im uncertain as to whether they are important when discussing allophones....can anyone shed any light? Thanks.
