Allocate / allot

What is the differnce between these two words?

Hi I think allot has a sense of limiting things to equal quantities and distributing , whereas allocate has a sense of just distribution . Allot should be used only when things are divided up into equal chunks and then distributed. Eg: The computer allocates varying amounts of memory to the programs.
