Allergic

Hi,

Does it mean that she liked the country or she didn't? And what does county mean here? these are the words of a singer and so could it be the country music?

Life was peculiar to me then,” she said. “I was allergic to the country. I was raised on the streets, in hot, steamy Brooklyn, with stifled air.”

Top answer

allergic is not being used literally, but figuratively. Life in the country (in a rural area, not near a city) did not appeal to her at all. She was not accustomed to that sort of environment.
