all this/ all of this... help~

I need to find some rules on when to use "all this" and not "all of this". Are there some rules where I have to use "all this" and not "all of this"? In this sentence, "What's all this?", can I use "all of this" instead of "all this"? Any help would be appreciated.

Basically, they are interchangeable with nouns and pro-forms, but 'all of' is used with personal object pronouns. All (of) the contestants were losers. All (of) that jazz is unintelligible.
