All the better

Does this sentence sound OK? Does the "all the better" here work fine?

The economy may have started to recover, but it doesn't necessarily mean that our living standards have become all the better.

Top answer

It doesn't work properly. "have become any better" would work. I would probably change "it" to "this".

If the sentence was affirmative, as something like this, then would it work?

The economy has started to recover, and this may imply that our living standards have become all the better.

I would say this is acceptable without being an obvious use of "all the better".

I question the use of "imply", but that's a different matter.

What do you mean by "without being an obvious use"?

"Even though it's not a typical way of using that expression", or something?

Yes, it is not the most typical way of using that expression.

Good.

Actually, I thought the same thing as you do when I asked the question. I'm glad to know that my idea was the same as yours.

Thank you, GPY!
