I can't speak for England, but in the US, Catholic and Episcopal churches are dropping the apostrophe in the name of the church. What used to be St. John's Church is now St. John Church. I believe that the possessive is being removed to stress the idea that the church belongs to the people, the congregation, rather than to the saint after whom it is named.
