"all of a sudden" and "suddenly"

I've seen characters in Friends used "all of a sudden" a lot. Is "all of a sudden" more common in spoken English than "suddenly"? Does it hold in written English too?

Top answer

They are both common enough in spoken and written English. "all of a sudden" has more of an emotive "story-telling" feel that may not be suitable in more objective or formal contexts.
