I think the second is stronger in meaning than the first one, am I rght?

It is difficult to put my fingers on their subtleties - for me as a non-native speaker the latter connotes more the idea of the huge amount of time being up the spout. I do not want to talk through my hat, it is only a personal opinion. Is the use of comma justifiable in my last sentence?
