Wowenglish the meaning of "I'm all about volunteering The statement by itself means that the speaker considers "volunteerism" a good/important/laudable/unselfish endeavor, and that he considers this to be his most important activity in life. (helping his fellow man) I guess the point of the comic strip is to observe that "do-gooders" sometimes do more harm than good, being overconfident that they're doing the right thing.

Hi

This is interesting - I have seen "volunteerism" a few times. I think it is US; but it is related to the UK phrase - "the Big Society"..

The idea is that government does not have to pay professionals - instead it can use unpaid volunteers

There are two problems that worry people..

(a) will the volunteers be caring and know enough?

I think there are also many professionals who "don't care." Some people are just stupid, and others get their priorities mixed up.

Who knows what a person's motives are for volunteering or for becoming a professional.

On the contrary, he wanted to inflict pain, just as children often do at that age. His excuse is a matter of "playing innocent".

I'll assume this insight is based on intimate knowledge of the character through constant readership.

My insight, based on intimate knowledge of the character through constant readership, is that it's a girl (Zoe), not a boy. Her pony tail doesn't show in this particular picture. Apart from that detail, I agree with Jim's interpretation. Zoe and Hammie are both "all about" tormenting each other at every opportunity.

Many thanks, Jim and Khoff, for setting us straight on this. Emotion: smile

Hi all

Can I just sign off from this thread by saying that I was a volunteer for a year and I recommend it

I am unhappy only with the way that politicians try to use the idea

On questions of language:

(a) I would say the human act is "volunteering"; perhaps we should use "volunteerism" as the political word only

(b) Avangi is right - to be quite correct

I agree completely!
I was looking for an economical way to couch my definition of the phrase. I thought better of it, but got lazy.
