Align oneself with causes

Hi

Men also seem to have a stronger need than women to identify themselves with groups and align themselves with causes. They are, it seems, much more liable to become obsessive fans of football clubs or pop groups, or to espouse political or religious causes to an obsessive degree.

--- Does these two "align with causes" and "espouse with causes" mean that men tend to ally themselves with other people in order to achieve some goals.

I would interpret those two particular phrases to mean that men need to identify with something outside themselves, in addition to enjoying being a member of a group. The two often come together in one package. Here is an old joke for you: A man moves to a small town and opens a business, but he's not doing very well.
